Mercury Thermometers and Dolphins
The moment you become a parent, there is a very small part of you that knows things will change. You won’t have quite as much control as you used to…But with years of parenting under my belt, I now know, I have zero control…maybe even less than that, if that’s possible-which I now actually believe that there could be a control number that is negative. I feel like most days I operating at a -50 on the control scale and just managing chaos. Here in Mexico on our 3rd day of spring break, that lack of all control was highlighted nicely for me. Thank you universe (insert sarcasm here).
Today was the day, I was going to cross off a bucket list item, swim with the dolphins, boy was I excited! I felt like a little kid as I woke up today thinking, “I am going to swim with the dolphins in just a few hours”…then just like an old school record needle skidding off the record playing my favorite song, I hear my daughter in the still dark room this morning saying she has body chills, aches, a fever and has been up all night. That bastard influenza, followed us to Mexico. So, in true parenting fashion, the day has been readjusted. We got to visit the Mexican onsite clinic-this was the paid tour I didn’t know I was going to be taking today. We rolled up to a weird building standing on it’s own. We get walk into this very odd, small room with no air conditioning, which is awesome for someone with a high fever and who also happens to be wearing a sweatshirt. The Dr proceeds to check her vitals. She is barely able to sit up and I see him pull a mercury thermometer out of his pen holder cup. Ummmm, what? He then proceeds to get a dry cotton ball out of a non-sterile jar-wipes it off once and puts it in her mouth. I am not sure if he saw my face, but my facial expressions are NOT subtle. My face looked like a capitalized WTF. The only thing that gave me solace in this moment, is he said that he had no patients yesterday, so whoever’s germs were on there last hopefully had enough time to be non-contagious! I apologize in advance for the next person who puts that in their mouth, as they will likely be taking home Influenza from my family, you’re welcome. So…here we are, I am lying in bed next to a very sick girl. I took my boys to the indoor trampoline and BMX park for the day, where they will be there alone. I pray gus doesn’t want to start BMX jumping-which is available. I don’t think I want to return to that clinic today.
Happy Spring Friends-Hope you are staying healthy where ever you may be! All of us are taking some antiviral drugs, I think, lol. not 100% what they are, but only 16$ a box, what a deal- I may have asked for 4 boxes. The dosing and usage made no sense, I may be taking these until the end of the month with what was described. . #winninginmexico.
Today, we choose the mercury laden thermometer tour over dolphins, because parenting will always take first priority. Dolphins we shall meet again! I promise.
